California Gains its First Combined Hydrogen and Gasoline Station

Shell Hydrogen and General Motors Corporation (GM) opened a hydrogen fueling station at an existing Shell gasoline station in West Los Angeles in late June. The combined hydrogen and gasoline fueling station is a first for California, and only the second in the country: Shell and GM opened a similar station in Washington, D.C., back in 2004.

Study Finds Solar Could Provide 10% of U.S. Generation by 2025

A new study from Clean Edge says that solar energy could reach cost parity with retail-electricity rates in most regions of the U.S. in less than a decade. The "Utility Solar Assessment (USA)" study, produced by Clean Edge and Co-op America, provides a roadmap for utilities, solar companies and regulators to reach 10% solar in the U.S. by 2025.


Toyota Doubles the Range of its Fuel Cell Vehicle

Toyota Motor Corporation has developed a new version of its fuel cell hydrogen vehicle (FCHV) that can travel about 515 miles on a single refueling. Toyota doubled the pressure of its hydrogen storage tanks to 70 megapascals, or about 10,150 pounds per square inch, which accounts for most of the increase in range.

Wisconsin Public Service and enXco Sign Wind Farm Sale Agreement

Wisconsin Public Service Corporation (WPSC), a subsidiary of IntegrysEnergy Group, Inc. (NYSE: TEG), and enXco, an EDF Energy Nouvelles companybased in California, agreed to terms of a transaction in which WPSC willpurchase a 99-megawatt wind farm to be constructed near Riceville in HowardCounty, Iowa, by enXco. The Crane Creek wind project is expected to cost$251 million for acquisition and construction-related activities withclosing of the sale to occur in the third quarter of 2008.

New center to research ways to convert sunshine into low-cost electricity and fuels

The newest research center of the Colorado Renewable Energy Collaboratory aims to find ways to directly convert the sun's energy to low-cost electricity and fuels. The Center for Revolutionary Solar Photoconversion (CRSP), announced today by Colorado Gov. Bill Ritter, U.S. Sen. Ken Salazar and the Collaboratory at the state Capitol in Denver, will be dedicated to basic and applied research at the Collaboratory's four member institutions, the U.S. Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), the Colorado School of Mines (CSM), Colorado State University (CSU) and the University of Colorado at Boulder (CU-Boulder).

Capstone Receives Order from Italian Hybrid Electric Bus Manufacturer

DOE to Invest $34 Million in Enzymes for Cellulosic Ethanol Production

DOE announced its selection of four projects to develop improved enzymes for breaking down cellulosic biomass material into sugars, which can then be fermented into ethanol. The DSM Innovation Center, Genencor, Novozymes, Inc., and Verenium Corporation were all chosen by DOE for their proven ability to reduce the cost of ethanol by improving the performance of the enzymes. Among the many partners on the projects are four DOE national laboratories: Los Alamos National Laboratory, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, and Sandia National Laboratories. For all four projects, DOE intends to invest up to $33.8 million over the next four years, subject to congressional appropriations, and when combined with the cost sharing from industry, up to $70 million will be invested in the effort.
